7 Epic Trail Running Movies You Must Watch

Apart from all, YouTube/Vimeo can be a place to go to for some serious trail running inspiration. As an avid follower of the Salomon TV and other running-related channels and websites (e.g Trails In Motion) I’ve successfully managed to stumble across some beautiful short movies about trail running. They can act as a great motivator so next time you feel lazy, tired, and unmotivated turn to YouTube/Vimeo – a good trail running movie will leave you itching for the mud, mountains and trails and fresh air.

So go and get some popcorn, sit back, relax and enjoy – Here are my top 7

1 Why We Run

Bernd Heinrich and his short movie is definitely on the top of my list! I first saw it only few days ago at the Trail In Motion screening in Wales with Anna Frost and it left a mark on me. This video looks back at this man’s incredible life, his achievements. Bernd talks about the lessons he has learned – about how democratic running is and how no one can take it from you. Make sure you’ve got tissues at the ready!

 2 The Ultimate Fan

This is how an ultimate fan should look like!!! Although he’s never ever run an ultra himself, Bill Dooper is top of the top and well-known in the ultra community, among the elites as well as general public. He is a total fan of ultra trail running and he’s spectated at every Leadville Trail 100 Run since 1988 and every Hardrock 100. Totally worth watching it and finding out more about Bill. I would love to meet him in person – this is what the movie will do to you 😉

3 Home

A beautiful and very emotional story about one of my running heroes, Anna Frost who had to overcome some pretty serious issues after her win at Transvulcania in 2012. She talks about her running and how she had to stop to find the love for it again. As a result, in late 2012 she decided to return to her home in Dunedin, New Zealand.

4 Depressions

Another great one, this time about Rob Krar and his battle with depression and how ultra running and his wife have helped him combat the darkness.

5 Finding Traction (paid)

A must-see movie! Full stop. Super-inspirational film about an incredible ultra runner Nikki Kimball and her quest to become the fastest person in history to run America’s oldest hiking trail, Vermont’s 273-mile Long Trail. You will see literally everything she goes through – the highs as well as lows and what it takes to run for 5 days, 7 hours and 42 minutes. Speechless! The movie will leave you speechless…

You can purchase and find out everything about the movie on the official website

6 The Teacher

After meeting Stevie in person earlier this year and I had to include this short movie about her. Great person, teacher, and a trail running super star, Stevie comes from the small idyllic mountain town of Crested Butte, Colorado. In this film she gives us a glimpse into balancing her life, her competitive streak and her love for teaching.

7 Wild Running

This one is not so emotional like the others however this is a brilliant mini-doc about 4 women who decided to complete various race of Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc in Chamonix in August 2014. Plus with the UTMB, CCC and TDS just around the corner, it might give you a bit of motivation…

What’s your favourite trail running movie? Please feel free to add the Youtube/Vimeo link in the comments below 😉
