There is definitely a new thinking now about how seniors should be keeping up their fitness.

We are bombarded with advice on how to get more steps in per day and how to improve our time for walking etc. Whilst muscle strength training and cardio work are both vitally important, for the average older person, or senior, muscle strength training is more crucial because it directly combats age related muscle loss which is responsible for falls and declining metabolic rate.

For overall fitness, a well rounded fitness routine for any senior should include both disciplines but if any prioritising comes into it, then the muscle strength training will help maintain an independent lifestyle and quality of life.

This also lessens the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Muscle strength training also supports bone health – by taking part in resistance training and using hand weights, this is now known to strengthen bones and can offset the risk of osteoporosis. Another benefit is that it enhances functional fitness by improving our ability perform daily chores like carrying laundry, shopping, heavy utensils and tools. Of course, the prevention of falls is number one in our list of benefits – more seniors end up in hospital because of falls than most other inconveniences.
