As folk age, there is a great tendency to sit in the chair and not really do a thing about keeping themselves fit and active. The over 60s is now an absolutely huge sector of the population and with better healthcare, that sector will keep increasing as the lifespans increawse over the decades. When you think that in the 1940s after the last real world war, life expectancy for women was longer than for men but neither were past 70 years old. Now we find it very common to reach 100 and well over that. However, just existing is not the same as living fully and to do that one must be confident that they will not start falling all over the place, sustaining injury and pain, and being a real nuisance to their nearest and dearest relatives. It is so much better to attend some sort of class, maybe at a gym or other community group for pilates or more active exercise to increase muscle mass, to in fact stop muscle loss and help offset the effects of arthritis and debilitating bone loss. Tasking up bone strengthening and upper body work will help with loss of balance and mobility better than anything else and certainly more than just giving up and sitting in an armchair all day watching tc. Disease prevention and management is also helped by regular exercise as it improves cardiovascular helath and regulates blood sugar levels, thus reducing the risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes – both of which take up so much NHS time and funding.
